All good things #H4AW

Thank you for being an awesome participant / follower / supporter of Hack for Ageing Well! In this post we recap the setup and workshops at the event – see here for all the results! Furthermore have a look at the original blogpost on 2016.aalhackathon.eu

We experienced two great days at Startfeld St. Gallen, where the pace was set by the AAL Programme and our Challenge contributors. We were well looked after and catered to, motivated and energized, our ideas attentively listened to by our teammates, experts, entrepreneurs and 45 fellow participants.

Our brainstorming session on day 1 looked like this: first, a bird’s eye view was presented by the organisers to show how hackathons fit in the chain of idea to R&D to production to market. Then each Challenge was briefly introduced, followed by short speeches from each of the challengers (or reps from their orgs). After each speech a paper airplane was thrown into a corner of the room, where anyone interested in working on the project later congregated.

Very quickly we went from a room full of people to only a handful of indecisives, who based on skill/general interest area were then recommended to the teams. Some people decided to switch later on, and the organisers knew where each project was happening and directed. Nobody was left out, and surprisingly productive groups were quickly formed in this way.

Three workshops at the latter half of Sunday afternoon featured national and international guest speakers who took the floor to share some deeper learnings and introduce us to some key insights that could benefit the projects.

Our first guest was a regional representative of Pro Senectute, the leading Swiss organisation dedicated to ageing, who along with two of their volunteers talked from deep practical experience applying ICT in the context of senior support. A lively discussion ensued on topics from app design to the role of insurances and investors.

A member of universAAL, an international project funded by the AAL Programme, then described what it was like to work with this network and about challenges in setting technical standards of interoperability and compatibility between smart devices.

Our third short workshop was on data literacy, covering resources available from the School of Data for collecting, analysing and communicating correlated facts.

Topping it off, we had a group Yoga session to stretch tired wrists and arms, expand breathing, clear heads, and reset for the hackathon sprints.

Stay tuned for the next post to read about the 8 exciting projects that resulted!

You are invited to Hack for Ageing Well

We are excited to announce Hack for Ageing Well, a two-day hackathon that we are organizing together with the Active and Assistive Living (AAL) programme, which will take place towards the end of September in St. Gallen.

Ageing Well means staying healthy, independent and active at work or in our community during our whole life. It is also a strategy in public policy around disease prevention and early detection, with better use of technology and better training towards a more supportive and accessible environment. We will set out to Hack: to rethink, sketch, prototype or build on existing technologies that – through more usable and considerate design – better support our later years.

Additional information can be found on the website, where you can register to get involved: https://2016.aalhackathon.eu/

Capacity is limited, so please book your (free) ticket if you are thinking of coming. We will soon have additional announcements of challenges and workshops for everyone who signs up!

We would appreciate suggestions if you have ideas of datasets or platforms, or would like to get your institution involved. This event is part of an international series, and we look forward to participants and datasets from around the world.

A collection of readings – by Barnaby Skinner

Dear friends & colleagues,
Dear Community,

I am currently attending a 3 month course at Columbia University in New York (together with Paul Ronga from Tribune de Genève and Mathias Born, Berner Zeitung). We are currently half way into the programme. It’s basically a course for journalists (but not just journalists), to enhance their data gathering, analytic skills (learning Python, Panda libraries, SQL, combining the three, scraping with BeautifulSoup and using Selenium for automated scraping, and much more).

I thought it would be a good moment to reach out to the community and share some of the readings and stories we’ve stubbled across. The main gist is that data driven society in the US may be a little more sophisticated than in Switzerland and Europe in general. But they are actually not all that far ahead. They are dealing with very similar problems and opportunities.

This is just a random collection of readings, which some of you might find inspirational or just offer a different perspective on data and how we deal with it.

Relational and Non-Relational Models in the Entextualization of Bureaucracy by Michael Castelle

Hope you are all well and look forward to any feedback or comments anybody has on the readings.

Les billets pour l’Open Energy Data Hackday sont disponible sur Eventbrite.

Prenez simplement votre laptop.

Opendata.ch congratulates the Federal Government with the new Open Government Data Portal and calls for a consistent implementation of OGD strategy in Switzerland

The Federal Government today launched the new national Open Government Data (OGD) – Portal opendata.swiss. This replaces the previously provisional pilot portal with a permanent platform. The association Opendata.ch congratulates our colleagues in the Open Government Data Switzerland project for this successful milestone, and is particularly pleased about the expanding list of governmental organizations that publish information openly on the new national OGD portal, including SBB and the Canton of Geneva. Furtheremore, the improved publication features encourage hope that other data holdings of the federal government, the cantons and communes will be made available as soon as possible in the form of OGD.

The release and publication of other databases such as company and address registers, road accidents or public administration expenditures as OGD – i.e. machine-readable, free of charge and without any restrictions – are urgently needed. Switzerland misses out every day on valuable impetus for innovation and economic growth when such data are not openly available. In the Global Open Data Index 2015, Switzerland lags behind in ranking 29 (2014: 24). Some reasons for this delay are that the supply of open data in Switzerland until now is very modest, and that a lot of data of the public administration are not machine-readable or fully usable.

The Federal Council adopted the Open Government Data Strategy Switzerland 2014-2018 in April 2014. It states: “The public administration in Switzerland has valuable, high quality data. The Federal Council wishes to make as much of this data as possible openly accessible and freely reusable within the meaning of OGD (…), through OGD to support development of an information society in our country, and to promote and strengthen the leading position of Switzerland in the global information economy.”

The association Opendata.ch stands behind this Strategy, calling on all responsible authorities to implement it in consequence, with as much useful data publication as possible.
